The question is: what fission technology will harness this wonderful and totally unique energy source? For over half a century, we have used conventional nuclear technology. But in today’s fast-moving energy economy, further development of conventional nuclear technology has been left to the public sector. This technology cannot meet the commercial and social challenges with designs based on technological decisions made decades ago.
At Terrestrial Energy, we know there are alternative fission technologies and a much better way. This is, why we took a fresh look at the many other fission technologies researched, developed, prototyped, and tested over the last 60 years — and carefully selected one to use in our thermal and electric plant that has been carefully designed today for today’s market and societal needs.
We brought together leading minds in industry policy, business, and technology to create that superior nuclear power plant technology — one that harnesses the enormous potential of fission energy to deliver reliable, resilient, low-carbon and cost-competitive thermal and electric energy for global industry.
We went to work with well-understood and prototyped molten salt reactor technology and added a series of unique and patented innovations to create a plant for broad industrial use and fast deployment. That plant is the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) thermal and electric plant.
IMSR® power plants deliver reliable, resilient, and carbon-free thermal and electric energy. They are simpler, faster to build, and easier to finance. They are much more versatile than today’s nuclear power plants that use conventional nuclear technologies.
One IMSR® plant can generate 880 megawatts of thermal power or nearly 400 megawatts of electricity from two reactors. This is big enough to power a city the size of Denver, Sheffield or Vancouver 24/7, come rain, wind, or sunshine, in summer or winter. This is big enough to supply the thermal and electric energy to produce green hydrogen or green ammonia at industrial scale.
