Resilient and Sustainable
IMSR® is Resilient Energy
With the growing threat of disruption to critical systems, the value of resilient power plants and electric grids is rising in importance. Conventional nuclear power plants already have demonstrated their reliability and resilience in many situations, such as polar vorticies and other extreme weather events, when other sources of power are forced to shut down. IMSR® power plants improve further on this position as they are “black-start” capable. This feature, prized by grid operators, permits IMSR® power plants to start generating electricity without grid power.
To meet the world’s growing energy demands while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, a clean energy alternative is needed that is cost-competitive with fossil fuels and easily deployable at scale. IMSR® technology fulfills that goal and is poised to play a key role in our clean energy future.
Many countries aim to have primary energy supply with net-zero emissions by 2050. Government, NGO and academic experts forecast that this is not possible without nuclear energy. They agree nuclear energy must play a critical role in our energy future. However, conventional nuclear technology is insufficient to meet that promise. Advanced reactor technologies, such as those used in the IMSR®, have that potential.
Many countries aim to reduce emissions by 80 percent by 2050, and many forecast that this is not possible without nuclear energy. Experts agree nuclear energy must play a critical role in our energy future, but conventional nuclear technology is insufficient to meet that promise.
Advanced reactors such as the IMSR® represent a step-change improvement. They avoid the many drawbacks of conventional reactor power plants.
IMSR® is Clean Energy
IMSR® power plants use energy from uranium fission, which is 10 million times more energy dense than fossil fuels. IMSR® power plants have among the lowest environmental impacts of clean energy technologies today.
The life cycle emissions of greenhouse gases from nuclear power plants are among the lowest of all energy sources. IMSR® nuclear plants are virtually emission-free on a life cycle basis.
Nuclear Is Resilient and Sustainable
With current extraction methods and reactor technology, easily accessible uranium resources will last centuries. Future evolution of IMSR® technology could include use of spent nuclear fuel, “breeding” fuel cycles, and even thorium fuel. With these iterations, IMSR® nuclear power becomes near-infinitely sustainable as an energy resource, one that can meet the majority of global energy needs for many centuries. Even millennia.
